Not only will you burn more calories in a HIIT session, you're working harder as you alternate periods of maximum effort and active recovery. But it will also kickstart your body’s repair system, which means you'll burn more calories in the 24 hours after your HIIT workout than you would after a run or a regular gym session.
Build your powerhouse
If you've tried TRX before, you'll know that it's a surprisingly tough core workout. This is because the set up of the TRX suspension system creates constant instability, meaning your body needs to work harder and your core is constantly activated. The functional, multi-plane movements also mean that you're working multiple muscles in your body at the same time, providing a complete full body workout. Building good core strength will also help improve your performance in other sports and exercise classes.
Focus on form and function
While you may think the kettlebell is just another weight, it really is so much more. Exercises using kettlebells conditions the body, increasing cardio function and muscular endurance. They also work your balance and motor skills more than regular weight exercises, and improve coordination, which means that not only will your body get a workout, but your brain will too.
Boxing is one of the best ways to relieve stress and get a full body workout all at the same time. Physically, hitting boxing pads produces a response in the body that helps to reduce tension, while symbolically, taking your anger out in this way allows you to express and release it in a much healthier way, rather than bottling it up or taking it out on another person. Boxing also increases production of endorphins, neurotransmitters that create feel-good thoughts in your brain. Punching helps to relieve muscle tension that can collect when you experience stress and can also help to improve your focus, increase your concentration and distract you enough that you may just forget why you were stressed in the first place!
Stick to it
Shorter fitness classes are often easier to stick to for multiple reasons - they fit well into most schedules, they don't tire you out as much and they're more enjoyable than some longer steady state classes. By mixing up the equipment you use, and your class types, you'll keep your mind interested and your body constantly working. Plus, you'll normally start noticing changes in your body shape, your energy levels and your state of mind after just a couple of sessions, and nothing helps you stick to a fitness routine quite like seeing it working!
Summer is on the way, it's time to love the body you're in!
