There is so much information out there about healthy diets that we get a little confused. So we were delighted to meet Jeanette Hyde and hear her thoughts on how a healthy body is governed by the gut.
Her method focuses on eating foods to nourish your microbiome - that's the kilo and a half of bacteria living principally in your gut. A healthy microbiome keeps weight and digestive symptoms down, mood and energy up. It is linked with glowing beautiful skin, and improved response to stress. When your gut bacteria are being fed the right food, you should feel fantastic physically and mentally. In fact, your gut is now dubbed your "second brain". No wonder many people find mental clarity comes with feeding it right!
Her book The Gut Makeover is out now and we have 6 copies to give away - more on that below.
Here are Jeanette's three top tips to give your gut a makeover, and drive weight loss:
1. Have a 12-hour fast between dinner and breakfast. You can drink water during this time. Just note the time of your last mouthful of food, and wait till the morning for the next one. Super easy to do, and helps good bacteria in the gut proliferate, which can help blunt hunger overall.
2. Eat as many different plants as you can in a week. Try to get up to 30 varieties. Some people even reach 60! Include lots of fresh chopped herbs, scatter pomegranate seeds on roast vegetables, grate carrot on top of salads. The more diverse the vegetables and fruit you eat each week, the greater diversity of gut bacteria you’re likely to have which helps balance your weight.
3. Include fermented foods in your diet where you can for the good bacteria in them. If you tolerate dairy try fermented milk kefir with berries and flax seeds for breakfast. You could fork sauerkraut onto your salads, and stir fresh miso into stir fries before serving. The bacteria from these kinds of foods is useful to plant in your gut and help you feel less hungry and lead to less calories being extracted from your diet overall.
