Get Energised

Let's face it, June just didn’t deliver the sunshine. Waking up to constant grey skies and torrential rain can sap your energy. Practising in our FAR infrared heated yoga studios will keep your mood buoyant and your joints juicy.

We've put together a few ways to increase your energy levels wherever you are:

1) Breath for energy - Visama Vritti 1 – Long Inhalation v Short Exhalation

This is a simple breathing practice that will perk you up like nobody’s business. This breath can be practised whenever you need some energy.

Find a comfortable seat and begin to breathe with softness in and out of the nose. With each inhale begin to lengthen the breath ever so slightly until eventually over the course of 5-10 breaths your inhalation is twice as long as your exhalation. Visualise that you are increasing levels of prana or upwards moving positive energy on the inhale and releasing apana or downwards moving or negative energy on the exhale. Practice this breathing technique for between 3-5 minutes before you allow your breath to return to its normal rhythm once more.

2) Legs up the wall pose to perk you up in an afternoon energy dip

This pose is the best remedy for tiredness, five minutes in this pose is a reviving tonic for the whole system as blood from the lower body is circulated with a little help from gravity to the heart and head, instantly reviving and refreshing.

Sit close to a wall, with your right shoulder and hip touching the wall and carefully swing your legs straight up on to the wall, inching your bottom as close to the wall but keeping the tailbone down. Pop blanket for cushioning under your head and let your legs feel totally supported by the wall. If you’re new to yoga or have tight hamstrings practice with slightly bent knees or pop your legs over the seat of a chair.

3) Ski Breath – no slopes required

This will wake up both mind and body, it’s like giving your spine a drink as you unroll on the way up, hydrating the discs, ten of these and you’ll feel ready for whatever the afternoon throws at you.

Stand with your feet hip distance and your toes slightly turned out. Float your arms over head with an inhale and then exhale with a long “haaaaaaaaaa” sound through the mouth and rag doll your body over your legs arms can reach back behind you momentarily before you release your arms towards your feet. Hang here, grounding and surrendering your weight through your feet, lift at the arches of your feet and begin to slowly unroll your way up with soft knees, connecting through inner thighs, pelvic floor, deep abdominals, your diaphragm all the way up to the crown of your head as your head comes to float above your ribs. Repeat 5 – 10 times.
