The latest buzz in wellness is hormones. Hormones are chemical messengers and are secreted in response to the chemical composition of the blood as well as stimulation by other specific hormones and also by signals from the nervous system.
You probably heard of cortisol, the stress hormone, too much of which can be damaging to tissues but kept in check cortisol gives us our get up and go! Did you know that Insulin regulates sugar in the blood, that oestrogen strengthens your bones, testosterone gives you confidence and sex drive, thyroid boosts your metabolism, leptin inhibits hunger, endorphins trigger a positive feeling in the body and oxytocin is the love hormone that helps you to connect with others?
You won’t be surprised to learn that regular exercise, a balanced diet and plenty of rest and sleep are key to keeping your hormones finely balanced.
Healthy habits can offset the effect that modern day living has on your body.
Alternating your high intensity training days with yoga and restorative yoga is helpful because the focus on breathing, meditation and poses has a positive effect on the endocrine system and helps balance hormones when they are out of whack. Yoga can lower blood cortisol levels, reduce adrenalin and stimulate GABA, a hormone which calms the brain.
The circuit training classes on the Power Plate are great for balancing hormones as well as improving your insulin response boosting testosterone.
Jumping into the saddle in the cycle studio will give you a short and intense ride that is timed to give you maximum results without depleting your resources.
