Emmy Lopes - Glow Yoga Teacher

20 September 2014

Emmy-goodvibes-glow-yoga-londonEmmy is a Glow Yoga teacher, you can book into her classes here.

What is the best time of the day to practise/exercise?

Any time! I love to practise first thing in the morning and also in the evenings but finding a regular time that fits with your schedule is the key.

What do you recommend to eat before your class? After the class?

Before class- it’s best not to eat 2 hours before but to stay hydrated with water and even warm water with lemon.

After class- nourishing whole foods of your choice! For breakfast, I love soaked oats, with seeds, fruit and cocoa nibs and in the evenings miso broth with fresh vegetables. And of course rehydrate with water, coconut water and herbal teas.

What do you love about Good Vibes?

I love the friendliness of the students and the ethos of the studio- that yoga practice here can be challenging and energising but also safe, with awareness of contemporary anatomy. I also love the gentle heat and daylight lamps, great for waking up and beating the winter blues!

What do you teach in class?

Through a flowing dynamic sequence of postures, we build up to new challenges and cultivate breath and body awareness, to reinvigorate, uplift and release. Each class has a different focus to deepen the practice week upon week.

How will I feel after your class?

Refreshed, energised and grounded.

Tell us something surprising about yourself...

I studied fine art, so when I’m not teaching I occupy myself with painting, creating and making a mess in my art studio.

Emmy Lopes has been practicing yoga for 14 years and since her initial RYT 200 training 7 years ago, she has studied further with teachers Max Strom and Kate Ellis. Believing in the transformative power of yoga both on and off the mat and that yoga is for everyone irrespective of strength, flexibility, age and stress levels! She teaches with good humour and openness, her style is flavoured with elements of a range of disciplines from Qi Gong to Ashtanga.

Improve your Sports

14 September 2014

Yoga for Sports

Do many Sports people do yoga? The smart ones do! There are a whole heap of proven benefits to combining sports training and yoga and it’s becoming more and more popular by the week. You need your body in order to do any sport or exercise. So if you love Sports, love your body and it will let you keep on it for longer.

As a Sports person you may well be driven by a need to go fast and hard until you are exhausted. Do not take this drive with you into the yoga studio, yoga is not a Sport!

Your yoga practice should be flowing and challenging, but it should allow you to take full and nourishing breaths. Learn to appreciate a different type of challenge and don’t beat yourself up if you find you can’t do everything at once.

Remember how good it felt the first time you ran 5K? That’s how good it will feel the first time you master a challenging pose, and just like when you cracked your first goal and then set your sights on the next one, yoga will present you with its own set of challenges.

Where to start? The Foundation class is a techniques class you'll be given lots of instruction on breath and how to fine tune the poses to suit you.

The Dynamic Open presumes knowledge of yoga poses and has options for all, the Fire class is for those who want more of a challenge with arm balances and inversions. The restorative Bliss class is a must for busy Londoners to undo the stresses of living in a city, the yang and yin is a combination of dynamic yoga followed by restorative poses and ends with yoga nidra

Mai Arwas - Glow Cycle Teacher

14 September 2014

Mai is a Glow Cycle teacher, you can book into her classes here.

What is the best time of the day to practise/exercise?

For me the best time to exercise is when you get up in the morning. Have a cup of coffee and head out for a run/cycle or any type of cardio. Then I usually like to go to a yoga class in the evening. But it all depends. As long as you get the workout done with enough energy it’s awesome!

What do you recommend to eat before your class? after the class?

Before class - coffee. A full stomach is not good for a high intensity training class.

After class -I like to drink a protein shake when I can right after as a recovery, or within the hour after training go and get a good amount of protein in (i.e.: Eggs and veg, chicken and veg. maybe a sweet potato.)

What do you love about Good Vibes?

I truly love the vibe when you walk in - the happy colors and the combination that people get by being members, as it is very important to combine your exercises and not only purely do cycling.

What do you teach in class?

I teach high intensity intervals and almost circuit training on the bike, taking what you do in the gym and adapting it for the bike, so no upper body movement, just hiit workouts making you push hard, all with awesome music in the background so that you get lost in it, get motivated to work really hard and almost forget that you are working out. Have fun. I have fun with it so I hope everyone else will.

I also like to ask the people what type of music they like, I love taking requests and having the members input!

How will I feel after your class?

Awesome! and spent I hope, but with a ton of good energy!

Tell us something surprising about yourself...

Surprising? mmmm... I am an actress, singer and a dancer.

When I was younger I played football, basketball, and did judo, kapuera, mii thai as well as being a cycling addict in the streets, skateboard chick and roller blades. as well as doing ballet and being in a band.

Mai Arwas known as Mai Mai, is an actress, singer and dancer who started teaching cycling 3 years ago after her instructor at Equinox Beverly Hills recommended she train to teach. Mai went for it and just fell in love with the energy teaching brings, as well as seeing people leave her class steaming and sweaty, knowing she has done her job well. Bringing her fun loving style to class, Mai loves to get people singing along and really enjoying the class while working hard and reaching their goals.

James French - Glow Yoga Teacher

10 September 2014

James is a Glow Yoga teacher, you can book into his classes here.

What is the best time of the day to practise/exercise?

Self Practice? - First thing in the morning. Wake up, do your Kriyas (purification/cleansing techniques) and get practicing. But if you're going to a Yoga class - whatever time suits you and whatever time your teacher is teaching at!

I find that the early morning muscle and joint stiffness is actually useful - it keeps us safe by stopping us from over-stretching. And the Kriyas are really great... If you haven't tried them before, start out with the tongue scraper and Neti pot - you'll soon be wondering why no one told you about this earlier!

What do you recommend to eat before your class? after the class?

Nothing before the class.... You want an empty stomach when practising your static Udianna Bandhas! Afterwards I'm quite partial to a Green Smoothie.

What do you love about Good Vibes?

The lovely shala - those SAD lamps are a stroke of genius in the dreary London winters!

What do you teach in class?

I teach Hatha Flow. It incorporates creative Vinyasa, elements of Tantra and longer held, traditional Hatha poses which focus on restoring balance to specific energies and Chakras (energy centres). One of the oldest definitions of Yoga is that its "the practice of quietening the mind...." I think if it ain't doing that, it ain't yoga!

How will I feel after your class?

You might have trouble remembering where you parked your Unicorn.

Tell us something surprising about yourself...

I literally can't. The present moment is all that matters anyway, right??

James French first dipped his tiniest toe in the vast yoga ocean in 2003. Following a martial-arts incurred cervical injury, he was told that surgery was the only option. However he resisted and experienced an amazing recovery through his yoga practice. He soon returned to India to embark on his path as a Tantric Yoga Teacher. James has a level 2 - 500 hour Yoga Alliance qualification and teaches both Vinyasa Flow and Hatha. Classes involve a challenging, creative flow with focus on strength, stability and alignment to attain states of union between mind, body and spirit.

#GoodVibes happy client

6 September 2014

"I first came to Good Vibes in 2009 feeling like my life was over. A year earlier I had bi-lateral hip replacement surgery and, although I have always been quite fit and had been in regular physiotherapy since the surgery, I was still crooked, limping and in pain.

Today, at 55, I am stronger than I have ever been and have more energy than I have ever had— which is so amazing. Every part of my body benefits from a Power Plates class and each teacher offers something unique. The Glow Cycle classes are also fantastic and, like the Power Plates, the instructors teach with knowledge and passion.

My life in London is demanding and Good Vibes studios are a haven that help make everything else possible!"
