THE DIY RACE MANTRA GUIDE Yoga for Runners & Cyclists

27 September 2014

Stretch1

‘Mantra’ means ‘Sound Instrument’ in Sanskrit and is a word or phrase repeated audibly or silently to evoke a feeling.

Mantras are widely used by endurance athletes to:

1) Motivate a flagging body

2) Silence mental gremlins that undermine confidence (‘you haven’t trained enough, you won’t make it..’)

3) Stay mentally sharp during long distance cycling and running events.

3) Calm an over anxious mind, perhaps pre-competition.

Mantras are always PERSONAL, PRESENT TENSE, POSITIVE AND ACTIVE.

Famous Mantras

‘This is What You Came For’ - Scott Jurek, Ultramarathon Champion

‘Never Ever Give Up’ and ‘Smile’ - Chrissie Wellington, Ironman Champion

‘Cool and Calm’ - Bradley Wiggins, Olympic Champion and Tour de France Winner

HOW TO PICK YOUR MANTRA

1) Pick Your Sport - Running or Cycling.

2) Pick Your Event - ‘Endurance’, ‘Speed’ or ‘Hilly’.

3) What is Your Mantra for? – Motivating? Relaxing? Pace-making?

4) How Long Will it Be? A Single Short, Punchy Word? or Long  ‘Affirmation’ (timed with footfall/cadence or a ‘Cadence Chant’).

Carli Wheatley - Glow Cycle Teacher

25 September 2014

Good-Vibes-Cycle-Teacher-Carli-WheatleyCarli is a Glow Cycle teacher, you can book into her classes here.

What is the best time of the day to practise/exercise?

Anytime you can fit it in.

What do you recommend to eat before your class? After the class?

I don't recommend eating before class, I would generally leave 2-3 hours before exercising, but if you just ate and you have the chance to exercise, wait 30mins and go for it. After class I would have a protein shake. Also have some water 30mins before exercise.

What do you love about Good Vibes?

There is something about the energy in the air, it's so positive and friendly.

What do you teach in class?

Glow Cycle.

How will I feel after your class?

Exhausted, joke! Well kind of not joking, exhausted in a good way and pleased with your effort.

Tell us something surprising about yourself…

I'm a body builder! I love big muscles.

Carli Wheatley is an experienced cycling instructor, level 3 personal trainer and level 4 sports massage and injury specialist, with a real passion for fitness, having previously received awards in tennis, boxing and horse riding. Since qualifying 10 Years ago Carli has trained a diverse range of clients, helping them to achieve their full potential through educating, empowering and supporting them on their personal fitness and health journey. Sevda Onder - Glow Cycle Teacher

25 September 2014

GV_LogoHiRessmlSevda is a Glow Cycle teacher, you can book into her classes here.

What is the best time of the day to practise/exercise?

First thing in the morning. It helps you to feel energised for the rest of the day.

What do you recommend to eat before your class? after the class?

At least 1.5 – 2 hours before, have a nutritious meal/snack containing dark green veggies with grilled meat/fish. Even better, juice your greens and drink them – great for your digestion, skin and energy.

Post workout within 30-60 minutes, you should eat carbs such as sweet potato, dark greens (raw) and meat or fish.

What do you love about Good Vibes?

I was very excited when I came across Nahid and the team, they are individually knowledgeable and I am looking forward to working with and learning from them.

What do you teach in class?

I teach cycling and have done since 2007, aqua, boot camp, circuit, core blast, abs attack, extreme fit (like Insanity). I am currently working with an MMA coach to hopefully teach this in the years to come. I also hope to add yoga to my list at some point next year.

How will I feel after your class?

Epic, sweaty and like a breath of fresh air, my sweat to the beat rave style cycle will be a positively life changing experience – never again will you underestimate yourself and your capabilities.

Tell us something surprising about yourself...

My go to for stress relief is martial arts and hitting the gym, but to be free and find peace, I love to dance, especially Latin.

Sevda Onder's background passion comes from her study of dance and martial arts as a child. This translated into becoming curious about how the human body worked and moved, and as a result she became a motion analyst and running specialist at Nike Town where she stayed for almost 4 years. Sevda graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Sports Sciences from Brunel University and further continued her love of movement by becoming a freelance instructor and level 3 personal trainer, and is currently in the final year of her Physiotherapy degree.

Grace Farmer - Glow Yoga and Pilates Teacher

25 September 2014

Grace-Farmer-GoodVibes-Glow-Yoga

Grace is a Glow Yoga and Pilates teacher, you can book into her classes here.

What is the best time of the day to practise/exercise?

I love to practise first thing in the morning or after a long day’s work, no better way to start or finish the day than committing some time to yourself.

What do you recommend to eat before your class? after the class?

I like to keep it light before a class, some dried fruit or a banana. After class I like to make sure I rehydrate well; something with plenty of electrolytes and minerals like an Asian inspired broccoli salad with chili and ginger!

What do you love about Good Vibes?

The range of classes! Something for every kind of mood, whether it be an energetic spin or ballet tone class or a grounding, calming yoga class.

What do you teach in class?

My classes focus on alignment, posture and coordination through high intensity, isometric exercises with a strong cardio vascular element.

How will I feel after your class?

Like you’ve worked parts of your body you didn’t know you could before! Expect to be sweaty and energized and feeling the burn.

Tell us something surprising about yourself...

I’m an identical twin! We are ‘Mirror Twins’, meaning she’s left handed and I’m right. I was also co-captain of the 2012 National Champion Co-ed Level 2 University Cheerleading team, Oxford Brookes Bluebirds.

Grace Farmer has been dancing for 20 years and has a passion for challenging the body, whilst taking good care of it. Her ballet background lead to a natural progression to practicing yoga and ultimately to teaching; creating enthusiastic, intense classes where students can push themselves whilst having fun and exploring what their bodies can achieve.

Autumn Equinox

Gain a new perspective this week as the Autumn Equinox moves us into Winter, embrace the changes, mix things up a little and shake up your routine to get through the new season with VIGOUR!

Here's why change is good:

It makes you adaptable – it’s natural to feel strongly about your passions but it’s also good to not get so attached that you can’t try something new and be open to different experiences.

When you try something different, it can often act as a catalyst for change and even progress.

You also discover new insights about yourself, are you out of your comfort zone when you are faced with change? Is it surprising or does it feel challenging? Often when we get irritated or anxious about change it can mean that we are tightly managing every aspect of our lives, adopt a more fluid approach and see what new possibilities open up for you.

Do let us know how you get on #GoodVibes
