Niko Geo - Glow Yoga Teacher

23 December 2014

Goodvibes-glow-yoga-london-niko-geo

Niko is a Glow Yoga teacher, you can book into his classes here.

What is the best time of the day to practise/exercise?

There’s no moment like the present moment. When in doubt, just roll out your mat and stop drop and do your yoga practice!

What do you recommend to eat before your class? after the class?

Nothing heavy and nothing 2-3 hours before the class. I usually recommend a handful of nuts or dates for some energy and stamina. After class I like to drink coconut water or something with electrolytes. Bananas, nuts and soy based products are also wicked, they're high in Potassium which is important for the good brain and nerve function.

What do you love about Good Vibes?

What it says on the tin. The good vibe of the studio. Students and staff are the nicest people, making the place a warm and inviting place to come to and let your practice unfold.

What do you teach in class?

Step onto the mat with no expectation and step off it with no judgment. Find yourself present; find your inner rhythm and let your body flow. Let your body dictate the intensity you want to work out at. As every person and personality is different, so is the body. Each body needs to find their own shape and form within each asana. Find the form that works for you and then commit to it. Play around with intensity and depth depending on how and where you are today.

How will I feel after your class?

Each time we step on and off the mat the experience is different. Try not to look for the constant. Aim to live in the present moment of the practice each time. Allow yourself to be open. If it's meant to be everything will fall into place naturally and you will leave your mat sweaty, relaxed, rejuvenated, calm and with a smile.

Tell us something surprising about yourself...

I’m not Spanish!

Niko Geo is a strong believer that as every person and personality is different, so is the body. Each body needs to find their own shape and form within each asana. He sees it as his task to guide students through their practice, in an effort to help them discover the shape and form that is best suited for them, that is as unique as they are inside and out. Niko teaches from the heart and every class is different. The only constant is the funky playlists that keep changing every month. Focus is given on lyrical slow flow that builds up to a dynamic sweaty core workout in the middle, only to soften towards the end for a Jivanmukta (liberating) ending to your practice. Aimed for the yogi that likes to explore, experiment and progress gently, building up strength, flexibility, stamina and endurance at the pace that is implied by his own body. Find the courage, come, commit, listen, explore, work hard, let go, get up, smile and go.

Jessica Schepp - Glow Yoga Teacher

21 December 2014

Goodvibes-Yoga-London-Jess-Schepp

Jessica is a Glow Yoga teacher, you can book into her classes here.

What is the best time of the day to practise/exercise?

It completely depends on the person. Personally, I enjoy a good morning practice. It provides me with a balanced mind throughout the day. However if you're not a morning person or just don't have the time, practice when it's right for you! If you find that you don't have time to get to a class, even 15 minutes on the mat at home can be beneficial.

What do you recommend to eat before your class? after the class?

If you're hungry before class, I recommend something light such as half of a banana or a handful of almonds. After class, it's best to refuel with some kind of protein. I love edamame or greek yogurt!

What do you love about Good Vibes?

The people! It's so important to have warm and encouraging people around you and that's exactly what you get when you walk into Good Vibes. From the front desk staff to the instructors, everyone has such positive energy!

What do you teach in class?

I teach that it's okay to move like yourself. It doesn't matter what the person next to you is doing. All that matters is that you honour your body and do what feels best to you. I instruct proper alignment above all else. However it is up to the student to adjust in a way that feels right to them.

How will I feel after your class?

Rejuvenated! My classes are well rounded and include a variety of poses, great music and a soothing savasana!

Tell us something surprising about yourself...

I am a certified chef!

Jessica Schepp first found yoga when she moved to New York City after finishing college at Florida State University. She stumbled upon a yoga studio that was warm, welcoming and instantly gave her a sense of community in such a big city. Growing up as a competitive dancer, the vinyasa flow came naturally to her. It didn't take long for yoga to become a way of life and newfound passion for Jessica. She soon decided she wanted to share her experiences with others and received her 200hr teacher training from Laughing Lotus Yoga Center in New York City. A born mover, Jessica enjoys incorporating free flowing movement into her vinyasa classes which encourages students to move in a way that feels most natural to their bodies. She adds an invigorating and inspirational playlist that enhances the experience and opens the heart. Come explore your practice, get lost in the music and breathe positivity into your life!

Reasons to be cheerful

15 December 2014

smile

There is a comfort in the rituals of Christmas and it's a good time to take a moment to truly appreciate all that we have and all that we have managed to do.

And talking to you all, how fully we all live our lives! From getting married this year to having our first baby to further education, new jobs, new romances and travel  - aren't we all lucky?

Research carried out by the University of California showed that a regular practice of appreciation improves emotional and physical health, as well as strengthens relationships and communities.

People who kept an appreciation diary exercised more frequently, reported fewer physical symptoms of pain and were more optimistic. Plus they made better progressions towards their personal goals over a two-month period.

Here's an easy practice of appreciation that you can do every day in the morning, before you go to bed, before you eat, before you make an important decision and whenever life feels challenging.

Sit up on your sit bones with the soles of the feet on the ground. Imagine your head is like a helium balloon lifting up towards the sky and your spine feels tall and spacious.

Take your breath and awareness to the space behind your breastbone and breathe from here for a few breaths. Now think about something, no matter how small, in your life that gives you joy. It could be a walk in the park or the sun on your face, it can be anything at all that makes you smile.

Allow the corners of your lips to turn up and breathe that feeling all the way into your fingers and toes and exhale all the way back to the space behind the breastbone.

Do this 10 times and then slowly open your eyes.

Tweet to let us know what YOU are truly appreciative of in your life and we will enter you into a prize draw to win a  #Good Vibes goody bag. #appreciation. Competition ends on the 31st Dec and winner gets picked at the end of the year.

Just one more drink?

8 December 2014

glasses-of-drinksWe LOVE a good party like the next person but we like to feel on top of the world SO much more.

So how do you have a life, a healthy lifestyle and a little festive drink?  Stick to the Good Vibes rules and make sure that you are fully aware of the choices you make.

Alcohol is high in sugar and contains a lot of calories, 7 calories per gram in pure liquid form. That means a standard drink of 10 grams of alcohol, is 70 calories and that’s before you consider the mixers.

As well as the high calorie content, alcohol wreaks havoc with how our bodies' process nutrients and how we burn energy. Our bodies can’t store alcohol so removing alcohol from the body takes precedence over other essential functions which can result in disrupting the fat burning process; some studies suggest the effects last 3 days after the event!

So it’s not just the calories on the night but the after effects that can give you a jelly belly.

The smartest way to have fun at a party is to plan in advance and decide whether you will drink or not – and remember you don’t always have to! If you are going to, eat something filling with lean protein before you go out.

Decide how much you are going to drink and stick to it. Our limit is 2 drinks to be able to get up and function the next day.

Drink a glass of water in between each alcoholic drink. Avoid the salty snacks and canapés, they are unnecessary calories and are often heavily salted which will make you drink even more.

Order a cab in advance to get you home in time, our trick is to leave a party before it all gets too barnyard!

Drink a big glass or 2 of water before you hit bed. Pop an eye pillow over your eyes to help you get off to sleep.

The next day...

Eat a protein breakfast in the morning and get some fresh air. The best class to attend the next day? Yoga will calm your nervous system and get you back into balance.

If you are not feeling nauseous then a quick Power Plate class will get your blood circulation going and your metabolism revved up to get you back on track.  Keep drinking water throughout the day, avoiding tea and coffee. A restorative yoga class at night will get you off to sleep like a baby. Jump into a Glow cycle class for the next two days to keep your metabolism burning.

A regular Good Vibes habit will keep your body fit, mobile and flexible and your mind in a calm state. And when you are feeling GREAT about yourself, it emanates from your pores.

Doing the same thing will keep you in the same place, but if you are looking for long term change, our winning combination of classes will keep your body and mind challenged.

The best way to do that is to become a member - you can pay month by month over 12 months or you can pay in one lump sum for a discounted price.

Whichever option you go for,  try it for 12 months and we promise that you will be in a much better place.
