Come in from the cold!

24 November 2014

Cycling-Chic-12Jump in the saddle

Too cold to run outside? Come in out of the cold and jump into the saddle this winter.

For the average runner indoor cycling doesn't just make you stronger, it makes you faster too. It benefits the development of your leg muscles which helps to stabilise the knee joints and encourage faster recovery of the legs after running, while the continuous cardiovascular workout helps to improve your overall fitness level helping you to get faster on your runs.

It's actually the relationship between cadence and the velocity of hip rotation in degrees per second that really provides the link up between running and cycling.

An individual pedalling at a cadence of 90 rpm (revolutions per minute) is generally rotating their hips at a velocity of around 220 degrees per second. This is equivalent to a 6.45 per mile running pace, while a cadence of 70 rpm would be equivalent to around an 8 minute mile.

This translates to running as it teaches our bodies how to react and move faster, so literally getting your legs moving fast on a bike will help you to move them faster on the ground.

If you haven't yet tried Glow Cycle, book into the Beginners Glow Cycle on Tuesday 2nd December. Don't miss out on the Train Smarter Indoor Cycling Workshop on Saturday 31st January with Nadine.

5 Easy Tips to Prevent Back Pain

18 November 2014

BackPain

Back pain is an extremely common condition. Most of us will experience it at some point during our life. The good news is that back pain can often be prevented. These simple 5 tips can easily be made part of your normal day and don’t require you to take any time out of your usual routine.

1. Move more

This is definitely the most important of the tips. Our bodies are designed to move. When we spend too much time in any one position, excessive strain is placed on our bodies and can also affect our circulation. Moving little and often throughout the day really can prevent a lot of back pain. If your job requires sitting for prolonged periods, take a break from sitting every hour even it’s just for a few minutes. e.g. go for a drink of  water or even take a toilet break.

2. Avoid carrying a heavy bag on the same shoulder all the time

Always carrying a bag on the same shoulder can cause chronic fatigue and pain as well as making your posture lop-sided. It can feel strange carrying your bag on your opposite shoulder but if you persevere with switching your carrying side from day to day, it will in time begin to feel natural and your back will thank you. Avoid carrying bags which are unnecessarily heavy by removing those bits and bobs which you aren’t going to need them that day.

3. Sit up straight

I hate to admit it, but my parents were right; it is important to sit up straight. Slouching places strain on our muscles, ligaments and spinal discs. It leads to chronic tightening of some muscles and the lengthening of others, causing imbalances and back pain.

4. Lift with bent knees and a wide stance

Lifting with bent knees will minimise the bend in your spine and mean your legs, which are stronger, do more of the work. Keeping your feet apart will help prevent your hips from locking so they can move better when lifting.

5. Seek Osteopathic help sooner rather than later

From personal experience treating many patients with back pain, I have noticed that patients who seek intervention earlier rather than later will often need much less treatment! Put up with pain, and over time, muscles can become chronically shortened, scar tissue can develop and bad movement patterns ingrained. Seeking early intervention can prevent a small issue from becoming a chronic problem.

Need help with back pain? We can help! Barry McVeigh from The Moving Body is at our Covent Garden studio on Mondays and Thursdays. To book an appointment, please call 020 7240 6111 or email reception@goodvibesfitness.co.uk

Cosmetic Acupuncture with Sam Ma

18 November 2014

CosmeticAcupuncture

Do you ever wonder how celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston get their glowing, smooth, impossibly perfect complexions and keep themselves looking so youthful?

It is the newest anti-ageing weapon, Cosmetic acupuncture!

Cosmetic acupuncture is the safest therapy able to give you the desirable result naturally without injecting poison such as fillers and Botox into the face. This therapy applies the principle "nourishing the internal to benefit external - better body better face" and that is why there has been an increasing demand for this treatment in recent years.

Acupuncture is a form of ancient Chinese medicine with a 2,000 year history, which uses fine needles inserted into various parts of the body to regulate energy flow,  improve blood flow and stimulate cell regeneration. Traditionally, it is used for pain management, IBS, migraines and gynaecological problems. Its aim is re-balancing the energy of the whole body.

Cosmetic acupuncture in particular can help to reduce wrinkles, lift sagging skin and improve skin colour, texture and reduce acne.

The treatment will leave you feeling pleasantly calm and relaxed afterwards, typically followed by an increase in energy the day after as with the whole body condition improves.

So, why not reward yourself with this wonderful therapy to regain your beauty with long lasting effect, leaving all those chemicals in make-up behind.

Sam Ma offers Cosmetic Acupuncture and cupping treatments at our Covent Garden studio on Tuesdays and currently has 50% discount off all first appointments. To book, please call the studio on 020 7240 611 or email reception@goodvibesfitness.co.uk

Get some Energy

16 November 2014

boost-immune-system

Boost your immune system

When the months get darker our energies take a slump, introduce a little rest into your weekly routine to replenish, restore and recharge.

First thing in the morning: Tapping – make a fist and softly tap 20 times on the breastbone – this is said to stimulate the thymus gland and chi in general.

How does it work? The thymus gland is linked to the immune system and is situated behind the sternum, it serves a vital role in the development of T-cells, a type of white blood cell. T-cells defend the body from bacteria and viruses.

Straight after work: Add in one restorative yoga pose to your day. It can be as simple as popping your lower legs up on the sofa, as you lie of your back on the floor with a cushion at the back of your head.

Pop a light scarf across the eyes to keep out the light and to signal the relaxation response to kick in. Focus on your breath and start to allow the inhale to gently open the lungs like a sea sponge moving in  3D – feel the ribs moving into the floor, the ceiling and out to the sides of the body. As you exhale feel the breath draw everything back to the spine.

This relaxing and gentle inversion eases anxiety and stress and helps to calm the mind. 5 minutes of this pose as soon as you get home from work will help you to transition from work to rest.

How does it work? Yoga helps to lower stress hormones that compromise the immune system, while also conditioning the lungs and respiratory tract, stimulating the lymphatic system to shift toxins from the body, and brings oxygenated blood to the various organs to ensure their optimal function.

As well as the weekly restorative Bliss yoga and Yang and Yin classes, book into the Glow Yang and Yin Boost Your Immune System on Saturday 22nd November 3pm - 5pm with Founder Nahid, a deeply restorative session starting with restorative yoga, building up to a fluid detoxing flow and ending with a 30 minute yoga nidra on wellness and vitality. Soothe your way into December.
